Workshop description
Through a series of exercises, improvisation, and experiments in collective expression, we explore ways of approaching free voice as both a process and an encounter (process-based work). By investigating the function of the voice, using chorus work techniques and playful explorations of rhythm and sound, we encounter the musicality of the body, resonance, and polyphony.
We work with song, sound, and improvised text by the use of devised theatre practices, experimenting with different forms of personal and collective expression, listening, and co-presence. We approach paradoxical territories of expression between scream, silence, and the limits of spoken language, embracing our “dissonant” and “irrational” materials as valuable fields of beauty, co-creation, and theatrical expressiveness.
●The workshop is accompanied by musician Haris Porfyridis.
●No previous experience of voice or singing is required.
Eirini Koumparouli graduated from the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens in 2010 and from the “Archi” Drama School of Nelli Karra in 2013. Since 2016, through her long-term collaboration with Rinio Kyriaki, she has been systematically researching Mirka Yemendzaki’s voice method in performances and teaching practices. Since 2018, she has also collaborated closely with Jullianna Bloodgood (Teatr Pieśń Kozła 2009–2018), researching practices of speech, voice, and ensemble work. As an actress, she has collaborated with directors such as Thodoris Gkonis, Rinio Kyriaki, Argyro Chioti, Anna Kokkinou, Lilly Meleme, Katerina Skourli, Monika Kolokotroni, and Elena Vogli. Since 2005, she has been working in workshops for children and adolescents aimed at strengthening the voices of vulnerable social groups, in close collaboration with Giorgos Moschos, former Deputy Ombudsman for Children’s Rights in Greece. She also collaborates with the Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network and has participated, among other projects, in the theatre program at the Second Chance School within Korydallos Men’s Prison (2017–2018). She holds a PhD from the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens and currently teaches at the Department of Architecture of Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi.
Haris Porfyridis was born in Thessaloniki in 1975. He has been involved with music from an early age, beginning his musical journey in children’s choir of “Panagouda” in Thessaloniki. While studying classical guitar in his twenties, he discovered and began playing the laouto (Greek lute), which he continues to perform today, accompanying musical traditions from various regions of Greece. He studied the Politiki lyra with Ross Daly and the Thracian lyra with Giannis Strikos. He holds both a degree and diploma in Byzantine music and has worked as an hourly-paid instructor in the music schools of Serres and Thessaloniki. As a musician, he has participated in numerous social and cultural events, dance associations, concerts in Greece and abroad, and recording projects. Currently, he is working on his first personal album.
