Playback Theatre: a mother tongue for social empowerment
Facilitator:Christina Stouraiti
Language: GREEK
Workshop description
A Few Words About Playback Theatre:
Playback Theatre is a form of improvisational social theatre with no script or director, based on the personal stories and experiences shared by audience members.
A Brief History of Playback Theatre:
Playback Theatre first emerged in New York in 1975 through the work of Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas. From its beginnings in small community settings, it has grown into an international movement active in more than 70 countries around the world.
Our workshop:
How can I shed light on all aspects of my multiple identity by mapping them both individually and collectively? How can I fully inhabit my identity without being (self)constrained by my environment, geography, or the era in which we live?
In our Playback Theatre workshops, we explore our values and ideals, share our concerns and dreams, recognize the rights and privileges we possess—or are denied—according to our position and perspective. Together, we unravel the thread of the questions we bring as a group, seeking the core of our personal stories through our commonalities, our differences, and even our own contradictions.
What we will learn:
How to cultivate deep listening, creative expression, acceptance, and empathy, developing our ability to step into another person's shoes without judgment, even when their experiences differ from our own.
Participants become familiar with the roles, rituals, forms, and fundamental elements of Playback Theatre. Together, we create a safe space for spontaneity and co-create a shared ground for reflection and social dialogue, fostering a sense of belonging and strengthening the cohesion of the group that holds and contains us.

The festival also provided an opportunity to connect with the other Playback Theatre groups currently active in Greece—seven based in Athens and twelve nationwide. Today, her group, Playback Ground, collaborates with other Playback Theatre ensembles, including Pyrinas Playback Theatre and Story Drops, fostering the exchange of tools, methodologies, and community empowerment practices in which Playback Theatre is applied across diverse age groups and social contexts.
