What led Matze to end his life?
In his bold 1996 play A punch in the face!, the author of Momo, Rainer Hachfeld, follows the lives of four teenagers in the wake of their classmate's suicide. How much does the loss of the lonely Matze really affect them?
Through short, action-packed scenes, Hachfeld tackles the issue of school bullying in a contemporary and engaging way, inviting both young and adult audiences to reflect on critical topics such as violence, friendship, personal responsibility, fear, loneliness, sexuality, and relationships at school and within the family.
During the Reading Club, we will listen to a full reading of the play. Afterwards, we will discuss how it addresses the topic of violence and explore ways we can work with the play in schools—through workshops or stage performances.
Gianna Tsokou was born in Germany and lives in Thessaloniki. She holds a PhD in Theatre Studies and Art History from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Vienna. She is also a graduate of Roula Pateraki’s School of Dramatic Arts. Tsokou is a founding member and actress of the Experimental Stage of "TECHNI." She has collaborated with the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG) as a theatre scholar. She has curated and hosted cultural radio programs for ERT’s “9.58 – Station of Culture.” In 2004, she served as a jury member for the State Prize for Playwriting for Children, awarded by the Ministry of Culture. Tsokou has organized educational programs for schools and taught Theatre History at the Higher Drama School "Andreas Voutsinas." She also created the department “Theatre Arts in Education,” and in 2012, she organized the program One City, One Performance for teachers and schools. In 2011, she was appointed a member of the Theatre Committee of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and served as its chair from 2014 to 2019. In 2015–2016, she coordinated the Open University Theatre courses for the municipality. She translates plays from German. In 2023, her translation of A punch in the face!, a play on school bullying for teenage audiences—was published by SOFIA Editions. The play was staged by the NTNG in 2017, directed by Stella Michailidi, under the title Are You Talking to Me? Since 2018, she has been organizing and coordinating the Play Reading Club for Youth and Children of the Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network. She currently serves as the Deputy Coordinator of the Network's Northern Greece Office. During the COVID-19 lockdown, she co-organized the online discussion series Back to the Future, focusing on theatre in pandemic times. She is a member of the Hellenic Association of Theatre and Performing Arts Critics. As of October 2024, she is organizing the Theatrical Play Reading Club at ALTEFABLON in Thessaloniki.
