Introductory note
The international community celebrates the World Day for Drama/Theatre in Education, with actions inside and outside of schools, around the world. This year, the journal "Education & Theatre" has set a date for publication two days later, on November 29, 2025.
A scientific journal that publishes one issue per year follows, to the extent possible, developments in research, theory and practice in the field, without always being able to catch on with daily current events. However, it is no longer possible to remain mere witnesses, in the face of an ongoing, visible in real time, humanitarian catastrophe, such as the genocide unfolding in Palestine. The theatre/drama-pedagogical community does not remain unaffected, as it cannot ignore the pedagogical and political aspect of the art of theatre. In this context, we considered it important in this issue to turn to Palestine and, beyond promoting local research, to give space to theatre-pedagogical voices on the ground, which with consistency and remarkable endurance contribute to the international debate on the power of theatre as a pedagogical and social act.
In the insert entitled: “Palestine: performing arts as resistance, resilience and sumud”, we are transported to where theatre and the performing arts function as fields of artistic expression but also of social empowerment, psychosocial resilience, resistance and healing. From Gaza and Hebron to Bethlehem and Jerusalem, drama and theatre acquire the character of experiential testimony and collective upliftment, offering children, young people and communities tools for meaning and survival in conditions of constant trial. Members of the university community, artists, theatre/drama educators and facilitators, as well as activists shed light on examples of research, good practices and actions that have been organized for years.
Issue 26 is published in English today, International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. In a few days, the issue will be published in Greek and the full insert will be published in Arabic, in honor of its contributors.
We hope that these narratives will serve as bridges of understanding, dialogue and solidarity within the international community of education and the performing arts.
