The Emotional Expression of the Character through Choral Function
Facilitator: Kelly Giannaki & Penelope Kazakoni
LANGUAGE: GREEK
Workshop description
This workshop is based on part of the 16-hour workshop “Choral Amplification” led by Peter Hussey in Ireland in July 2023, within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme MOLTOIR – Using Movement Techniques with Young People.
The workshop explores ways of introducing subtext and emotional tension into dialogue and performance. Participants will experiment with the creation of realistic scenes in which emotions such as tension, discomfort, shock, or conflict are already present and evolving. Through movement-based practices and choral techniques, we will investigate how the chorus can function as a physical and psychological representation of a character’s inner emotional world.
By using collective movement, rhythm, and spatial dynamics, participants will discover how emotions can be amplified and embodied beyond words, allowing hidden feelings and interpersonal dynamics to become visible on stage.
The process is particularly beneficial for young people, as it encourages emotional awareness, empathy, and communication. It also offers participants practical tools for exploring interpersonal relationships, expressing emotions creatively, and developing confidence through collaborative theatrical practice.
Kelly Giannaki is a theatre educator and Drama teacher in Primary Education, with extensive experience in the design and implementation of educational and cultural projects. She is a graduate of the School of Drama at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Sciences from the Hellenic Open University. In her work, she applies experiential and drama-based methods aimed at fostering creative expression, collaboration, and inclusive participation within the educational process. She has taken part in numerous training courses and Erasmus+ programmes, with a particular interest in the connection between theatre, movement, and experiential learning. In 2023, she attended the Erasmus+ programme “MOLTOIR: Using Movement Methods to Work with Young People” in Ireland, which became the basis for the development of training workshops for educators. At the same time, she is artistically active as a storyteller and performer in music-theatre productions, while also participating actively in the initiatives of the Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network, both as a facilitator and as a member of organizing and coordinating teams.
Penelope Kazakoni graduated from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace in 1995. Since 2007, she has been working at the Centre for Environmental Education and Sustainability of Kastri, and since 2010 she has served as its Head Coordinator. At the Centre, she implements daily experiential learning programmes — both one-day and multi-day — with primary and secondary school student groups, organizes teacher training seminars, and develops educational material related to environmental education and sustainability. Since 2013, she has collaborated with members of the Panhellenic Network for Theatre in Education as both organizer and participant in environmental education training seminars incorporating educational drama workshops. Following this training, she has integrated similar drama-based workshops into all programmes of the Centre for Environmental Education and Sustainability. She is also a trainer in teacher seminars focusing on the use of drama-in-education tools in Environmental Education. Since 2017, she has been a member of the Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network and coordinator of the programme “It could be me, it could be you” in Arcadia.
