This workshop will use a Greek Legend of as its main stimulus. Throughout, participants will gain greater awareness of the way that different drama strategies, specifically require participants to engage in and develop different types of thinking and inter-thinking, as well as different types of talk (for different purposes and audiences). Reference will be made to the way that the various drama strategies used, can also be selected to support and prepare children as ‘thinkers and talkers’, before becoming ‘writers’ both within and following the drama experience. Working collaboratively through the medium of Drama, participants will explore and co-create known and possible narratives and dialogue. Working in and out of role, participants will contribute to, question and reflect upon various characters and their actions, as well as create and explore imagined settings. Stimuli used will include text, paintings, vases, statues, sound and music and the techniques and approaches used in the workshop, can also be used with other stories and text types.
Patrice Baldwin was a Primary Headteacher, Local Government Arts Education and Cultural and Creative Learning Adviser and Head of Norfolk Music Service. She was a School Improvement Adviser and Inspector and was employed by the government, as a national curriculum Drama Editorial Expert. She has lectured at universities worldwide and in 2014, became a Cultural Leader for Brock University, Canada. For 10+ years, she was Chair of National Drama (UK) and from 2010-13, simultaneously President of the International Drama, Theatre and Education Association (IDEA) and Board Member of the World Alliance for Arts Education (WAAE). Patrice published The Drama Book (Collins Educational) with Lesley Hendy, Teaching Literacy Through Drama (Falmer /Routledge) with Kate Fleming, The Primary Drama Handbook(Sage), With Drama in Mind, School Improvement Through Drama, Inspiring Writing Through Drama (Bloomsbury) with Rob John. She has also been a BBC Education Scriptwriter and Series Consultant for radio and more recently television.
