Free expression in Freinet’s pedagogy- Institutional Pedagogy. Movement and music improvisation motivated by a poem

Athens 25/11/2018

Katerina Alexiadi, Greek language and literature teacher, theatre theoretician, teacher of C. Orff music pedagogy, cultural administrator, Greece

2,5 hour workshop
Part of the 2018 ATHENS GREECE INTERNATIONAL THEATRE/DRAMA & EDUCATION CONFERENCE
organised by the Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network (TENet-Gr)

Language: Greek - English

Free expression, according to Freinet’s pedagogy, aims to personal expression and it is not preconceived from the teacher-animator. The trainees are encouraged to express their critical thought and release their creative capabilities individually or in groups. The participants in the workshop will be required to create short dance-theater and music compositions occasioned by a poem, which afterwards they will imprint in graphic scores. The preparation will occur through drama, kinetic exercises and experimentations with small percussion instruments, melodic percussions (glockenspiel) and recorders. The poem will be a start point in order to create soundscapes and kinetic improvisations,  which will be imprinted on a piece of paper as graphic scores and afterwards the participants  will perform their works in small groups through movement, small percussion instruments and speech. The aim is that the trainees will be familiarized with kinetic and music improvisation through experimentations and stimuli that will be provided by the trainer and that they will be able to use these elements in their everyday pedagogical practice. They will also realize the necessity of the input of the arts in the pedagogical process. At the beginning some exercises of acquaintance will be practiced and afterwards the elements and the stimuli will be given partially in order to lead the participants to create their own short kinetic and music compositions individually or in groups. At the end all the elements will be conjoined for a final result. The compositions of the groups will be performed according to the graphic scores (music and kinetic). Every group will have the opportunity to use its own semiotics that canbe interpreted with music and movement. Speech (the poem), movement and music will be combined in an unbroken unity. The workshop is addressed to teachers of all the levels and to everyone else who would like to participate.
